25 Years at the Lake: A Journey I Never Planned

In 2000, I had gone to Taiwan to teach English for a year. I arrived with about $100 in my bank account and, by the end of that year, I had managed to save enough money to travel again.At the teachers' end-of-year dinner, I was talking with another teacher about what I wanted to do next. I had been studying Reiki and wanted to continue my training with my Reiki master, who was going to be teaching in Ecuador.His response was simple:
"Why don't you go to Lake Atitlán in Guatemala? You can learn Spanish there, and then make your way down to South America."It was one of those casual conversations that, at the time, didn't seem particularly important.I listened.I looked at a map and found out where Guatemala was and decided I was going.I came to Guatemala in 2001 intending to learn Spanish and then continue on to South America.Somehow, I never left.
